Keeping up your site and keeping up with the changing currents in cyberspace is a complex and a clutter filled task. Things happen so fast and so frantically -- and new little mistakes creep into the fixes of other mistakes so often -- that I suspect it's best to just accept that you can accomplish whatever degree of website maintenance and keeping up that you have time for and no more.

Getting your website designed and online is one thing while website maintenance and keeping up with changes and issues is another.

Website design -- website authoring -- is just one part of the project. Once you design your website, you still need to make sure your implementation of website design is flawless and you need to keep it flawless while at the same time keeping abreast of the changes in cyberspace that may call for little tweaks in web design.

ezines for e-news

There are a variety of weekly e-zines that can be helpful and a bunch that can keep your e-mail cluttered up worthlessly. (When you sign up for an email e-zine, accidentally or otherwise, be aware that unsubscribing can be difficult to impossible. The likelihood that you will want to is directly proportional to the likelihood that you will have a hard time.)

Below are the e-zines I found and find helpful to scan as they come -- and find myself sometimes carefully reading. The advertizing that brings them to you for free is usually easy to skim past. The articles are very helpful in understanding the issues that relate to getting people to come to your site and enticing them to take advantage of its offerings. You'll find information on search engine optimization, html code problems and tricks, new trends in all aspects of cyberspace.

Regular check-ups for errors

As you tinker with this and that on your pages, you'll slip up and links will go down elsewhere. It is very helpful to run a checkup program on your pages with some regularity from before launching and freqently (i.e., weekly) thereafter. If your code is just a little messed up, it can make you invisible or problematic for surfer's browsers and search engine spiders. If your graphics are larger than they need be, your load time will suffer. If your spelling is goofy, your credibility is questioned. If your links are linking to unavailable pages, you lose some credibility. You can do checkups yourself or you can hire them done -- you can get software to do this or you can do it online.

[- check out this site - it's very helpful -]
This is a great service with a bunch of very helpful online helps for checking and tweaking webpages. Most of their check-up products (services) can be tried free on an unlimited basis. They will check your pages for coding errors, make suggestions for optimizing pages for search engines, identify browser conflicts, check for spelling errors, optimize graphics for speedier loading, check every link on your pages to be sure they are working and more. For a very small fee, they will automatically run a check on your site -- up to 100 pages -- on a weekly basis (very helpful if you are like me and constantly tweaking pages) and send you an email directing you to their site for an extensive, easy-to-understand-and-use run-down of any problems found, of broken links, how fast each page loads, spelling errors, code problems and all sorts of recommendation. check your search engines rankings

Websites are ranked in the search engines on the basis of each individual keyword. If you have several keywords, you should find out how your site is ranked on each. Knowing how high you rank in the search engines for your various keywords can tell you where you need to focus your efforts.

AgentWebRanking
[- download this SOFTWARE - very helpful -]
AgentWebRanking is freeware designed for webmasters, webmarketers and search engines consultants. You plug in the keywords you want to research and the url(s) you want to check and the programs goes to all the major search engines and checks to find the search engine page number and ranking number for each url for each keyword. This is really helpful to determine how you're ranking on individual keywords, individual search engines, and individual web pages so you can strategically allocate your efforts. You can also plug in competitors' urls and see how you compare to the competition. The only marginal downside that I find with this program is that it operates from your computer and can tie up bandwidth and computer resources (it goes out and tries to check about ten pages at once), though to date this has meant only slower surfing while it is running in the background.

RankPilot
This is a free online service that will check to see where you rank on various major search engines. When I've tried it I found it very conservative -- that is, it missed a lot of what AgentWebRanking, above, found. (Since results are easily verified, I determined that this was missing rather than AgentWebRanking adding extra.) It's online, free, and better than nothing if you don't want to tie up computer and bandwidth doing checks with AgentWebRanking.

Checking your search engine listings is good for two basic checks -- to see if you are there at all and to see how your link looks to searching surfers that my get it on a page of potential links.

check your link popularity

The number of times your site's url shows up on other sites is basically how search engines decide if you are popular. The more links to you they find, the more popular they judge you to be -- with links to you on sites similar to yours given greater weight. The more popular a search engine thinks you are, the higher the ranking they give you. You can find out how popular you are -- or get a general idea. Results may depend on traffic at the time you check and the thoroughness of the program -- you might get differing results from different programs.

counters & tracking visitors

How many people are visiting your site and from where? As you work your fingers to the nubs on your keyboard, you might wonder if anyone is actually visiting and from where. It is helpful to know which pages on your site people come to first, how long they stay, etc. There are counters for no money, little money or lots. There are counters that just count and others that keep detailed stats for you.

A great counter that keeps track of how many visitors you get, where they come from, how long they stay, where they go. You can get the counter for free or, with a few more features, for a fee. Very good stats for free!
